    BOOMERANG

IT ALWAYS COMES BACK TO YOU

It was a hot afternoon and we were all hungry so we decided to visit the 'bukka' (local eatery) where we usually eat, after placing orders and having the table set, a friend said "madam this your stew get too much pepper oh, I no fit chop am" (Madam this your stew is too spicy-pepper, I cannot eat it), to our amusement, she replied "na your mouth be that oh, plenty people don com chop am and nobody talk say pepper too much"(it must be your mouth because a lot of people came and ate the same stew without complaining about the spice). He got offended by her reply and almost left had we not intervened. Now for someone who savor spicy food, I almost requested for more pepper on that same stew my friend was complaining about, but I had no choice than to 'chop am like that, mek peace for de' (manage it for peace to prevail).

The reply that 'mama' gave kept beating drums in my head, I got to realize that, my friends' opinion about the stew does nothing to change the state of things or even the condition of the stew but it defined him, least I forget, she concluded by saying "no vex bros, if you come tomorrow I no go give you stew wey get pepper" (don't be angry, when you come tomorrow, I will serve you a stew that is not spicy). It was clear that she was not going to change her recipe because one customer complained about an ingredient, she'll simply not give that customer that which does not contain that particular ingredient while the rest of us who like it the way it is- and will not mind adding more spice, keep getting our regular.

That scenario thought me something about life, nothing changes because you don't like it, it only changes its reaction towards you who has issues with it and at the end of the day, it defines you more than you seeking to define it. For example, I prefer tea a zillion times over coffee any day, anytime but that does not change what coffee is, it only defines me as someone who does not fancy coffee. So imagine me visiting a friend and the only available beverage is coffee, I certainly will not be served because I don't fancy coffee not because the coffee has any problems with me but because I have problems with the coffee.

Applying that to our daily lives, your opinion about a thing, person, people, idea or notion does not necessarily change what it is (except if you are the author/originator of such), it only defines you and reveals who you are. So telling me your prefer a Benz car to a Toyota has nothing to do with either brands, instead, I have a clear picture of who you are- a Benz person. Toyota will not change simply because you will not choose any of its products, after all there are many others who will pick a Toyota over your Benz any given time.

Am I saying you should have no opinion or choice? No. You and I have that very powerful weapon called CHOICE for a very good reason. You are who you are because of the choices you've made and you will be who you will become by the virtue of the choices you will make henceforth, your opinions help to direct your choices and select the option you deem fit for that particular thing. All I am saying is, at the end of the day, it is always going to be about you, not the idea, person/people, thing and or even the spice you prefer or not. What you feel about a person does not define that person but it totally defines you, what cause or idea you choose to believe in defines you in every sense of the word. Your preferences defines you and like it or not, it will always come back to you. So next time you want to throw that boomerang, keep in mind that it will certainly come back to you because at the end of it all, it is all about YOU.
