Come to think of it, that singular question has been staring at every human that ever walked God's blessed earth and will always be there to face all who ever will grace this earth (I picture the question as an old man with his glasses lowered to the tip of the nose, reading the dailies with a cup of tea on the stool beside him while wearing that expression 'kids of nowadays'). Anyway, answering this singular question can take a lifetime of discovery and rediscovery, finding and searching which often comes with miscalculations, assumptions, uncertainties, getting lost, being wrong, having fears, doubt and even second guessing oneself albeit, it must be answered otherwise we are just like the chickens we eat daily.
As puzzling as it may seem, I have personally decided that whatever I am not and cannot be does not fall anywhere near my purpose on earth. For example, I am not good at drawing and anything graphics despite the fact that I've tried learning over the years, so I've concluded that graphics and designs don't form any part of my purpose. But walk up to me anytime, anywhere with a topic for an essay, paper, proposal or write-up, sit back for few minutes and watch wonders. My friend and brother Dave Emeka Nwali (who by the way designed this blog and in fact the very first logo for my entertainment club Kaakaki which later turned to Da Elevators Club a few years back) on the other hand can design anything within the shortest possible time and has been earning a living from it, now that is part of his purpose in life. I am pretty sure there are tonnes of things he is not excellent at just like me. The bottom line is, your purpose in life has something to do with that which you can do effortlessly, comfortably and drive joy from, this includes acquired skills, trade, innovations and inventions. If you have to sweat every time to do it, after sweating to learn and master it, then I don't think it is part of your purpose, this excludes manual labor and physical stress because with purpose comes hard work and with hard work comes sweat so do not mix the two.
Mark Twain said "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why", Henry Kissinger (a former US Secretary of State and Noble Laurette recipient who many consider one of the greatest war strategist or criminal by others for his role during the Vietnam war) added "If you don't know where you are going, every road will get you nowhere"
To cap it all, you came to earth with a purpose and your mission is to accomplish it through the vision you've been mandated with. Believe you me, no one has the same purpose as you on earth, not now, not ever because as the good book said of Joseph "TO EACH MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DREAM HE INTERPRET". If discovering your purpose seem that difficult, I suggest you discover what you are not and cannot do be, then whatever is left can guide you towards your mission.
To EACH HIS OWN...What is YOURS?
