All he could talk about was how life was back then, how he did this, how he did that and how he was this and that. He could not simply move away from his university years and all the "heroic excapades" that came with those times, even though the flaws and juvenile delinquencies are excusable to an extent now. Over the course of time, he has refused to see that the world only understands and works towards the future, towards tomorrow, towards progress and towards betterment, irrespective of the pollution rate and natural disasters.
There was a time when the Volkswagen Beetle was the in-thing, not owning one was like living with the Flintstones, then the era of sleek designed Benz cars came and last I checked Elon Musk is really working hard towards making us float into space, he actually want to die and be buried on Mars (can you imagine that?). Well, brace yourself for the days are fast upon us because a few years ago, if you tell the world that cars can drive themselves while being powered by solar or electric energy, most people will be sceptical, that is if you are not dubbed insane, unrealistic or even heretic, but here we are today, Tesla, Alphabet and the other tech companies are already working and developing futuristic AI and inventions.
So where does that leave us as individuals who must lay hold of the future (if we want to feature in it at least), yet having a serious crisis with letting go of the past or simply having problems growing? I can perfectly understand the part the past plays in shaping and preparing us for the future but we have to realize that whatever we are today is as a result of all that which we have been through and had we not gone through those, we might not have arrived here in the first place, this is one of the reasons why I don't subscribe to history being blotted out of our school curriculum. We need to know our past so as to avoid that which we failed at and so that we are better prepared for that which is to come. We can reminisce and have a good laugh about the past, how we fared in certain situations and how we flopped at some, we can even take pride in some heroic acts because for all I know, those are the little parts that forms the whole that we are today. Having said that, it will be an absolute waste of life and resources to cling unto a boat that is fast sinking when there is another readily available vessel sailing into the future. It will be a pity to keep holding to who we were when the opportunity to create who we want to and ought to be is right here waiting for us to grab it. We are in a fast moving and evolving world where many today live in constant fear that AI will soon take over jobs and hijack the quality of life we have and all that, but to all that I say, there is always space in the new house for the owner so long as the old stuff, that are not needed in the new are left behind. We can have a zillion challenges and issues to face with most of them admittedly glaring at us with each passing day, but we are left with a choice, to either let go and grow or hold on and sink.
Growth is by far one of the most difficult process we have and must go through if we most create, catch-up or even build the future. Take the little parts that form the whole you and grow into the present and future, a demanding and herculean task I know but as Shirley Chisholm said "if don't have a seat at the table, bring your own chair", the table needs your chair. Grow...Bring it on...
